In 2022 I got me an Elektron Digitakt for traveling. I had already been using the Oktatrack for several years but found it a bit too big to have it in my hand luggage.
The Digitakt samples in Mono, irrespective of 1 or 2 of its channels have input. To my surprise I started to like it. So I put on my headphones, listened to all my samples to determine if being in stereo contributes anything to the soundscape . In more than 80 percent the answer was a clear »No’« and so I converted them into Mono files.
The Sterofield of my mixes are now made of Mono sounds which I can pan manually or by an LFO (big fun!) and I feel the whole thing is somehow clearer. Additionally the Mono files take less space in the sampler memory. Delay and Reverb add space. I often use some Delay and Reverb in the Digitakt to get an impression how it might sound but take it away again for recording. Then in Bitwig Studio I will have a chain where a Convolution Reverb is inserted into the Feedback Path of,the Delay instead of »wetting« the complete signal. Life is good…
